ABSTRACT:
Background: Structured Reminiscence Therapy (SRT) is a psychosocial intervention designed to stimulate memory recall, enhance emotional well-being, and improve communication among elderly individuals. Aim: To explore the effectiveness of SRT as a therapeutic nursing intervention to improve cognitive, emotional, and social well-being in elderly populations. Methods: A series of structured reminiscence sessions were conducted with elderly participants. Sessions included thematic memory recall, use of memory triggers (e.g., photographs, music, objects), group discussions, and recreational activities. Results: Participants demonstrated improved communication, enhanced self-esteem, and greater social engagement. Family involvement and personal artifacts enriched the therapeutic experience. Conclusion: Structured Reminiscence Therapy is an effective nursing intervention for promoting mental well-being, stimulating memory, and fostering social interaction in elderly care. Its integration into geriatric nursing practice can enhance holistic care outcomes.

INTRODUCTION:
Aging is often accompanied by cognitive decline, social isolation, and emotional challenges, making it essential to adopt interventions that promote psychological well-being among elderly individuals. Reminiscence Therapy (RT) is an evidence-based, person-centered approach that encourages recalling past events and life experiences to improve memory, boost self-esteem, and facilitate social engagement (Woods et al., 2018).
Structured Reminiscence Therapy (SRT), offers a systematic framework to evoke positive memories through guided sessions involving personal stories, photographs, music, and other memory triggers. It enables elderly individuals to maintain a sense of identity and belonging while improving interpersonal communication.
Research has demonstrated that reminiscence-based interventions significantly improve cognitive functioning and reduce depressive symptoms among elderly individuals (Zhao et al., 2019).
Nursing studies have also highlighted its benefits in enhancing social connectedness, fostering emotional resilience, and promoting dignity in aging (Kim and Park, 2020).
Incorporating SRT into geriatric nursing practice aligns with holistic care principles, addressing the psychological, social, and emotional dimensions of patient well-being.
· To enhance memory recall among elderly individuals through structured reminiscence sessions.
· To improve self-esteem and emotional well-being by sharing personal life experiences.
· To promote social interaction and strengthen family bonds.
· To explore the role of nurses in implementing reminiscence-based therapeutic interventions.
Research Approach:
The study adopted a qualitative exploratory approach to explore the effectiveness of Structured Reminiscence Therapy (SRT) in improving memory recall, emotional well-being, and social interaction among elderly participants.
Research Design:
A descriptive exploratory design was used. The intervention consisted of a series of Structured Reminiscence Therapy sessions focusing on guided memory recall and social engagement.
Study Setting:
The study was conducted in Makkalur, Periyaseeragapadi, Salem, Tamil Nadu, India, where elderly individuals residing in the community participated in reminiscence sessions.
Sample Size and Sampling Technique:
A total of 30 elderly participants were selected using purposive sampling based on their willingness and cognitive ability to participate in the therapy sessions.
Duration of Study:
The intervention was conducted over a period of 4 weeks, during which multiple reminiscence sessions were organized to facilitate active participation and memory recall.
INTERVENTION PROCEDURE:
1. Pre-Intervention Preparation:
· Comfortable venue arrangement with informal seating.
· Display of photographs and memorabilia to stimulate discussion.
· Ice-breaking activities, including refreshments and informal conversations.
2. Reminiscence Therapy Sessions:
· Reality Orientation: Recalling significant events chronologically and associating them with personal or global milestones.
· Thematic Discussions: Exploring topics such as childhood, family, marriage, friendships, and career experiences.
· Memory Triggers: Using photographs, music, and personal items to evoke memories.
Interactive Activities:
· “Question Ball” game for fun and spontaneous memory recall.
· Creation of a “Memory Box” containing objects of personal significance.
· Recreational therapy, including painting, pottery, and creative expression.
Family Engagement:
Encouraging family members to bring photo albums, favourite foods, and personal artifacts to enhance the therapeutic experience.
· Improved recall of personal and collective memories.
· Increased participation and interaction within group settings.
· Reduction in feelings of loneliness and social isolation.
· Enhanced family bonding through collaborative sessions.
· Higher levels of satisfaction and emotional well-being reported by participants.
Structured Reminiscence Therapy offers a holistic approach to elderly care by combining psychological, emotional, and social dimensions of wellness. It aligns with nursing’s person-centered philosophy and can be integrated into community health, institutional care, and home-based elderly support systems.
The therapy fosters empowerment by valuing the life stories of participants, thus enhancing dignity and self-worth. Moreover, involving family members in the process strengthens intergenerational relationships and promotes emotional security.
· Incorporate SRT as part of routine geriatric care.
· Train nurses to use memory triggers and structured group activities effectively.
· Encourage family involvement to strengthen emotional support systems.
· Conduct further research to measure the long-term effects of SRT on cognitive and emotional health.
Structured Reminiscence Therapy is a highly effective and practical nursing intervention for elderly populations. By stimulating memory recall, fostering social connections, and enhancing self-esteem, it contributes significantly to holistic geriatric care. Its integration into nursing practice can improve the quality of life for elderly individuals.
